FLAT4の歴史
FLAT4の始まりは、東京都目黒区南の住宅街。TYPE-1やTYPE-2がまだ新車で作られていたこの時代に、
SPLITやOVALウィンドーモデルをはじめとしたビンテージVWに魅せられ、ビンテージVW & スピードショップをスタート。
しかし、住宅街という立地の中では制約が多く・・・
FLAT4 began in a quiet residential neighborhood in Minami, Meguro Ward, Tokyo.
At a time when the TYPE-1 and TYPE-2 were still being produced as new cars,
we were already captivated by vintage VWs such as the SPLIT and OVAL window models,
and started FLAT4 as a Vintage VW & Speed Shop.
However, operating in a residential area came with many restrictions…

First Move - 数年後、広大な敷地のゴルフ練習場跡地のある東京都世田谷区下馬へと移転。ショールームやファクトリー、デポを構えたトータルショップとなった。マシンサービスは、少し離れたバス通りに構えていた。
A few years later, we relocated to Shimouma, Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, to a vast former golf driving range site.
There, FLAT4 evolved into a total shop with a showroom, factory, and depot.
Machine services were operated at a separate location along a nearby bus route.

PARTS CATALOG
VOL.1 - FLAT4創業から2年後、初のパーツカタログをリリース。オールモノクロで32頁とシンプルなものだったが、世界中から仕入れたパーツが網羅された、VWオーナーの夢が詰まった1冊だった。
Two years after the founding of FLAT4, we released its first parts catalog.
Printed entirely in black and white and consisting of just 32 pages, it was a simple publication, but it was filled with parts sourced from around the world, a true dream book for VW owners.

Bug In 22 - O.C.I.R.で開催された伝説のVWイベント「Bug In 22」に’52 TYPE-1 CHOP-TOPレースカーにてエントリー。オリジナルアイテムを販売するため、ブース出店も行なった。
We entered the legendary VW event “Bug-In 22,” held at O.C.I.R., with a ’52 TYPE-1 Chop-Top race car. We also set up a booth to sell original FLAT4 items.

FLAT4 FUKUOKA Open - 福岡県福岡市博多区に「FLAT4福岡店」をオープン。
東京本社との強力なネットーワークにより、西日本及び九州全域におけるVINTAGE VWの拠点となる。
“FLAT4 Fukuoka” opened in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City.
With a strong network connected to the Tokyo headquarters, it became a key base for Vintage VW culture throughout western Japan and the Kyushu region.

CAMP BEETLE
Open - 東京都目黒区自由が丘にわずか7坪のアパレルショップ「CAMP BEETLE」をオープン。当時のPOPEYEボーイ&JJガールに絶大な人気を誇り、店の前には常に行列が作られていた。
We opened a small apparel shop called “CAMP BEETLE” in Jiyugaoka, Meguro Ward, Tokyo. It gained immense popularity among fashion-conscious youth. Long lines forming in front of the store every day.

FAMILY DAY - 富士スピードウェイにて「VW FAMILY DAY」を開催。ドラッグレース、ミスコンテンスト、ジムカーナ、カーショー、スワップミート等が開催され、日本最大のVWイベントとなった。今や伝説のレーサーとなったMIKE SMITHやJIM LARSENの生の走りを日本で見られるのも「VW FAMILY DAY」の醍醐味であった。
“VW Family Day” was held at Fuji Speedway, featuring drag racing, beauty contests, gymkhana, car shows, and swap meets.
It became the largest VW event in Japan.
One of its highlights was the chance to witness legendary racers such as Mike Smith and Jim Larsen live in action.

PHOTO BOOK - 小森が自らの足でU.S.A.カリフォルニア各地を回り、撮影を行なった貴重なVINTAGE VWフォトをまとめたフルカラー写真集を発売。
Komori personally traveled throughout California, U.S.A., capturing rare Vintage VW photographs.These were compiled into a full-color photo book.

Second Move - 東京本社を目黒区鷹番へと移転。VWパーツショップや販売車ショールームの他、オールドタイムグッズ専門の50’s NETWORKもあった。
The Tokyo headquarters relocated to Takaban, Meguro Ward, Tokyo. In addition to the VW parts shop and vehicle showroom, the location also housed “50’s NETWORK,” a specialty store for old-time goods.

FLAT4 BRM WHEEL - 幻のホイールと言われていたBRMホイールをFLAT4が世界で初めてリプロダクト。BRMホイールを待ちわびていた世界中のCAL-LOOK VWファンから大絶賛され、FLAT4オリジナルプロダクツの中でもベストセラーとなった。
FLAT4 became the first in the world to reproduce the legendary BRM wheels, known as “rarest of rare wheel.”
Highly praised by CAL-LOOK VW enthusiasts around the globe who had long awaited their return, they went on to become one of FLAT4’s best-selling original products.

Third Move - 東京本社を世田谷区下馬へと移転。1FがFOR SALE CARのショールーム、2Fがショップとなった。ちなみに、この場所はそれまでFLAT4デポとしてパーツの保管等を行なっていたウェアハウスであった。
The Tokyo headquarters moved to Shimouma, Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. The first floor served as a FOR SALE car showroom, while the second floor housed the part & accessory shop. Previously, this location had functioned as a FLAT4 warehouse and parts depot.

Open - 東京都目黒区鷹番に「FLAT4 SPEED」をオープン。PORSCHE 356やM.BENZ、Jaguar等のクラシックスポーツカーの専門店で、目黒通りに面した1Fにはキレイに仕上げられたFOR SALE CARがずらりと並んでいた。
“FLAT4 SPEED” opened in Takaban, Meguro Ward, Tokyo. Specializing in classic sports cars such as Porsche 356, Mercedes-Benz, and Jaguar, the first floor facing Meguro Street displayed a lineup of beautifully restored vintage cars.

STEERING WHEEL - 1960年代にEMPI社によって作られたGTウッドステアリングホイールを、最高級のマホガニーウッドを採用してオリジナルリリース。発売と同時にたちまち人気となり、BRMホイールに次ぐベストセラーとなった。
The GT wood steering wheel originally produced by EMPI in the 1960s was faithfully recreated using the finest mahogany wood.
It quickly became a hit and the second best-selling product after the BRM wheels.

Responding to the demand for high-performance, high-quality exhaust systems, FLAT4 independently developed the Revmaster Quiet Muffler.
With superior exhaust efficiency compared to conventional quiet mufflers, it was released in both single and dual configurations and became a best-seller.

FLAT4 ELIMINATOR SHIFTER - 1970年代のクイックシフターの中でも高い人気を誇っていたEMPIエリミネーターシフターをリプロダクト。もちろん専用のケースもEMPIオリジナルを忠実に再現し、当時の雰囲気にこだわった。
A faithful reproduction of the original EMPI Eliminator Shifter, one of the most popular quick shifters of the 1970s.
The dedicated case was also accurately reproduced, preserving the authentic atmosphere of the era.

FLAT4 BANJO STEERING WHEEL - 当時からワンランク上のカスタムステアリングとして人気のあったバンジョーステアリング。しかし、オリジナルは1950年代のTYPE-1にしか装着できなかったため、ボス別体にてリプロダクトする事で、高年式のモデルにも装着可能とした。
The Banjo steering wheel had long been regarded as a premium custom steering wheel. Since original versions could only be installed on 1950s models, FLAT4 reproduced it with a separate boss, allowing installation on later models as well.

With the spread of personal computers, FLAT4 launched its official website.
Vehicles for sale and original products were introduced, sharing information with VW fans around the world.

Fourth Move - 東京本社を目黒区鷹番へと移転。自動車ディーラーが立ち並ぶ目黒通りは日本のデトロイトと呼ばれる絶好のロケーション。
The Tokyo headquarters relocated once again to Takaban, Meguro Ward. Meguro Street, lined with automobile dealerships, is known as “Japan’s Detroit,” making it an ideal location.

Online Shop - 世界的にインターネットが普及し、通信販売の一つとしてオンラインショップをスタート。空冷VWを構成する部品一つからチューニング・カスタムパーツまで様々なアイテムをラインナップ。
As the internet became widespread globally, FLAT4 launched its online shop.
The lineup expanded to include everything from individual air-cooled VW components to tuning and custom parts.

STEERING WHEEL - VW純正のディテールを忠実に再現して作り上げたFLAT4 VW純正スタイルステアリングホイールを発売。後にTYPE-2用もラインナップ。
FLAT4 released the VW Genuine Style Steering Wheel, faithfully reproducing original VW details. Later, TYPE-2 models were added to the lineup.

DRAG RACE - 仙台ハイランドジャパンドラッグレースウェイにて、PRAとのジョイントレース「FLAT4 STREET LEGAL DRAG RACE」を開催。一般の空冷VWオーナーにももっとドラッグレースを身近に楽しんでもらおうと企画された当イベントは2007年まで続いた。
In cooperation with PRA, the “FLAT4 Street Legal Drag Race” was held at Sendai Highland Japan Drag Raceway.
Designed to make drag racing more accessible to air-cooled VW owners, the event continued until 2007.

ALLOY WHEEL - 世界的に貴重なFUCHS社製911アロイホイール(5.5J)をFLAT4がリリース。その後、4.5J/6J DEEPやフルクロームタイプもラインナップ。
FLAT4 released the highly sought-after FUCHS 911 alloy wheels(5.5J).
Later, 4.5J / 6J Deep and full chrome versions were added to the lineup.

BUG-IN - ベルギーで初開催となったEUROPEAN BUG-INイベントへ、日本より’52 TYPE-1 CHOP-TOPでエントリーし初のヨーロッパデビューを果たす。
FLAT4 made its European debut by entering a ’52 TYPE-1 Chop-Top from Japan at the first EUROPEAN BUG-IN event held in Belgium.

BUG-IN 33 - 日本からINCH PINCHER TOO!を持ち込み、FLAT4として約30年振りにカリフォルニアの地でドラッグレースに参加。
FLAT4 returned to drag racing in California for the first time in nearly 30 years, bringing the legendary Inch Pincher Too! replica from Japan.

AIR CLEANER KIT - PORSCHE 356等のヴィンテージハイパフォーマンスエンジンを彷彿とさせるメッシュタイプのエアークリーナーを製作。WEBER IDF用に加え、SOLEX/KADRON用もラインナップ。
FLAT4 developed a mesh-style air cleaner inspired by vintage high-performance engines such as the Porsche 356.

FLAT4 reproduced the ABARTH muffler—considered the pinnacle of vintage performance for OKRASA engines—using stainless steel.

Treffen In Japan - 日本初となる本格的ヴィンテージVWイベントを企画開催。
その後、2011年、2013年、2015年、2017年、2019年と回を増す毎にエントリー車も増えヴィンテージVWの魅力が改めて認知された。
FLAT4 planned and hosted Japan’s first full-scale Vintage VW event.
With each subsequent event held in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019, participation increased and appreciation for vintage VWs grew further.

SHOWROOM - 東京本社の並びに、VINTAGEジュークボックスをディスプレイしたショールームをオープン。店内には丁寧にレストアが施されたジュークボックスがディスプレイ販売され、当時ならではのアナログサウンドを試聴する事もできる。
A showroom displaying vintage jukeboxes opened next to the Tokyo headquarters. Carefully restored jukeboxes were offered for sale, allowing visitors to experience authentic analog sound from the era.

Fifth Move - 本社を神奈川県横浜市本牧へと移転。アメリカンな雰囲気漂う本牧ストリート沿いに、広い駐車場を完備した2階建てのショップ&ショールームをオープン。
The headquarters moved to Honmoku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. A two-story shop and showroom with ample parking opened along Honmoku Street, known for its American atmosphere.
